Background of the Study
Family planning is an essential component of reproductive health, allowing women to make informed decisions about when to have children and how many children to have (WHO, 2024). Access to family planning services and education empowers women to take control of their reproductive health, reduces maternal and infant mortality, and improves overall family well-being (Afolabi & Hassan, 2023). In Nigeria, however, maternal knowledge and use of family planning methods remain low due to cultural barriers, misconceptions, and limited access to education (Eze & Bello, 2024).
Nurses are pivotal in providing health education on family planning, especially in hospital settings. Nurse-led education programs that include counseling, information dissemination, and individualized guidance have been shown to improve maternal knowledge and uptake of family planning methods (Ogunyemi et al., 2024). At State Specialist Hospital, Kano, nurses regularly interact with mothers, making them well-placed to influence knowledge and attitudes about family planning. However, the specific impact of these nurse-led education initiatives on maternal knowledge of family planning has not been systematically assessed.
This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurses' health education on maternal knowledge of family planning at State Specialist Hospital, Kano, with the goal of improving reproductive health outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Family planning remains an underutilized service in many parts of Nigeria, despite its importance in promoting maternal and child health (WHO, 2024). Many women in Kano are unaware of or have misconceptions about modern family planning methods, contributing to unplanned pregnancies and high fertility rates (Musa & Ibrahim, 2023). Nurses, who frequently interact with women during prenatal, postnatal, and routine visits, have the potential to significantly impact maternal knowledge and attitudes toward family planning. However, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of nurse-led education in improving maternal knowledge of these services.
This study seeks to address this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of nurse-led health education on improving maternal knowledge of family planning at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of nurses' health education on maternal knowledge of family planning at State Specialist Hospital, Kano.
2. To determine the impact of nurse-led education on the uptake of family planning methods among women.
3. To recommend strategies for improving nurse-led family planning education programs in hospital settings.
Research Questions
1. How does nurses' health education impact maternal knowledge of family planning at State Specialist Hospital, Kano?
2. To what extent does nurse-led education influence the uptake of family planning methods among women?
3. What strategies can be adopted to enhance the effectiveness of nurse-led health education on family planning?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses' health education significantly improves maternal knowledge of family planning methods.
2. Maternal knowledge of family planning is positively associated with the uptake of these methods.
3. Lack of adequate educational materials and resources reduces the effectiveness of nurse-led health education on family planning.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of nurse-led health education on maternal knowledge of family planning at State Specialist Hospital, Kano. It will not include other healthcare providers or community-based family planning interventions. Limitations may include variations in individual nurses' teaching abilities and differences in participants’ baseline knowledge of family planning.
